Land to Sea Expedition Aboard the S/V Denis Sullivan
Sail Away from Bay to Bay
This special two-day expedition is offered in conjunction with Michigan Technological University (MTU) and the Keweenaw Land Trust. Participants will be challenged to work aboard the traditionally rigged Great Lakes Schooner, S/V Denis Sullivan, while exploring important links between land and water conservation.
Lake Superior has a special place in the hearts of those who live on the Great Lakes and want to keep her waters clean and protected. The health of Lake Superior, and all of the Great Lakes, depends on careful and appropriate management of the surrounding lands.
This is not only an opportunity for the general public, but teachers can gain continuing education credit from MTU. You will get your hands dirty by participating in all ship’s operations while investigating the different features of terrestrial and lake ecology. Explore the positive impacts of conservation and learn about history and culture through a maritime lens.
Learn what it takes to build a community of learning while on a journey in this dynamic environment. Take principles of teamwork and experiential learning back into your lives or the classroom. This experience can give you: new lessons in hands-on learning, the latest methods in water quality monitoring, preparation for your own future S/V Denis Sullivan youth expedition, and professional development credit! You will get a chance to rub elbows with professionals in ecology, seamanship, conservation, water quality and history. All this as you sail Lake Superior with a USCG certified professional crew aboard Wisconsin’s Flagship.
