Science Under Sail
Today's youth grow up in a culture that is information rich but experience poor. With Science Under Sail (SUS), the information is learned in a real-world context where experience becomes essential. The voyage takes place aboard the world's only 3-masted, Great Lakes schooner S/V Denis Sullivan. While living aboard the ship, students learn to build a community of support while investigating the ecology of the Great Lakes or Caribbean. Students participate actively in all ship's operations.
GRADES 7-12 Curriculum
OCEANOGRAPHY/LIMNOLOGY:
Students are introduced to the chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the surrounding marine environment. SUS students will explore: biological tows, trawls, and sediment grabs.
NAUTICAL SCIENCE:
Students will apply mathematical and physics principles to solve practical problems of sailing a traditional schooner. Related topics include nautical safety, sail theory, navigation, and seamanship.
MARITIME STUDIES:
The connections among our water planet, commerce, and our many cultures are introduced through the histroy, arts, and literature of the sea. Students will keep a journal while reflecting on the communal culture of their own voyage.
