Science Under Sail™ (SUS) is an intensive, adventure-based, academic program designed to provide high school students and teachers with a practical, real world experience in the science of being at sea. They will live and work aboard the 137-foot schooner, the sailing vessel S/V Denis Sullivan.
Science Under Sail™curriculum supports state and national academic standards.
Oceanography/Limnology: Students are introduced to the chemical, physical, geological, and biological aspects of the surrounding marine environment. SUS students will explore: hydrocasts, biological tows, trawls, and sediment grabs and cores.
Nautical Science: Students apply geometry, trigonometry, and physics principles to solve practical problems of sailing a traditional schooner. Related topics include nautical safety, sail theory, navigation, and seamanship.
Maritime Studies: The connections among our watery planet, commerce, and our many cultures are introduced through the history, arts, and literature of the sea. Students will keep a journal while reflecting on the communal culture of their own voyage.
PROGRAM LOGISTICS PLANNING
Science Under Sail™ programs run for a flat fee that includes academic materials, room and board, and all field trip related costs. Our staff will assist teachers and students in coordinating transporation to and from the vessel.
