MICHAEL
“My days at Discovery World are some of my best days in the week.”
Michael is a visionary. During the spring and summer of 2011, he and his classmates from Bay View High School explored the methods and tools of personal and urban archaeology in the Art and Archaeology of Me program. He
participated in historical research, worked in a team, conducted professional interviews, engaged the public, and created visual art that explored and told the story of the history and the future of Milwaukee's unique Bay View and
Clark Square neighborhoods.

The program culminated in a student-produced art installation - the Milwaukee Observatory - to showcase student work, celebrate the local community, and tell the story of Milwaukee.s innovators, pioneers, and immigrants. "As a
summer intern at the Observatory, I met community residents, recorded their stories, and took photographs of historical artifacts; then we loaded them onto the website to help preserve them for the future. I learned that Milwaukee
really is my city."
Michael is now a junior at Bay View High School. His favorite subjects are history, graphic design,
and computer science. "Participating in the Art and Archaeology of Me program was a diversion from
my every day life. We got to experience things most people never get to experience."

LISBETH
“At Discovery World you learn things you wouldn’t even
think about in school. You might learn something one way; at Discovery World you will see it another
way and you understand it even better. Discovery World is a place to learn, but also to have
fun.”
Lisbeth is an innovator. As an 8th grader, she participated in a lab
experience at Discovery World through the Project Lead the Way program. Now as a senior, she is
entering her third year of volunteering through an internship at Carmen High School of Science and
Technology. Lisbeth has gained experience in many exhibits, including the Reiman Aquarium, and is now
gearing up to intern in the Kohl's Design It! Lab. She looks forward to working with cutting-edge
equipment and learning more about technology and industrial design.

Lisbeth is applying for colleges and knows that her experience at Discovery World will help her to
succeed. She wants to make her family proud and her relationship with Discovery World has given her
the skills and confidence to do that. "Discovery World has given me experience with how the real
world works, how to be responsible and be on time, and to do what I need to do to accomplish what I
want."
JAIME
“At Discovery World, there are so many classes to choose from. I know I am learning about technology and creativity and it will help me in the future.”
"I have gained new friends and skills through the Discovery World Summer Camps. The teachers are
cool, and many of them are young people who are just starting their own careers in Milwaukee."

Jaime is a creator. As a sixth grader her favorite class is art, and she is already thinking about
what her future career in Milwaukee might look like. Discovery World.s Computer Animation camp gave
Jaime a chance to rehearse for her own bright future as a digital artist. Jaime also thinks that the
programs aboard the S/V Denis Sullivan are the best way to learn about freshwater and the Great
Lakes; her family even got to see the schooner in Toronto at a tall ship festival.
Jaime and her younger sister Anna have been attending camps for several years. They can't wait for
the spring so they can pick out the classes they will take each summer. In addition to the experiences
at Summer Camp, Jaime's Girl Scout Troop has earned badges at Discovery World; they have completed the
photography and sewing badge so far.
OSHAWUN
“Schooner Boatworks gave me the experience to learn by doing
and to see how all the parts of the ship worked together to make it sail. I want to do it
again.”
Oshawun is a leader. As a graduate of the 2010-2011 Schooner
Boatworks program, he is one of twenty students from Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade
School who learned carpentry, engineering, plumbing, and the use of tools in a twelve-week program on
the S/V Denis Sullivan. Oshawun and his classmates worked side-by-side with the ship's Captain,
Engineer, and volunteers to master hands-on technical and mechanical skills. After learning about the
mechanics and parts of the vessel, the Schooner Boatworks team became mentors and sailors, teaching
younger students and applying their knowledge on a multi-day environmental sail on Lake Michigan.

Now a senior, Oshawun is looking forward to being a peer leader in the second Schooner Boatworks
program. He is writing his college applications and believes this program will help his chances of
getting into a good school. He hopes to intern on the S/V Denis Sullivan in the summer before
studying biology or engineering. "I had the opportunity to do something not a lot of people get to do. This
program helped me see how Milwaukee and Lake Michigan are unique compared to other places."
ALEXIS
“At Discovery World, I get to see and be around positive people with careers. Being at Discovery World gives me the motivation to strive harder to be something everybody says I can’t be.”
Alexis is not your average 17 year old. In April 2010, she applied to be a high school Summer Camp
intern upon recommendation from her advisors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Gear Up

take care of students. She worked with many of the 1,200 Discovery World Summer Camp participants.
Alexis excelled in her role as a camp intern, and staff encouraged her to apply for a position during
the year.
