Theater

Theater Technician

Part-Time
15-25 per week

Description

As part of the theater team, the Theater Technician maintains all audio, visual, and theatrical equipment within the Innovation and Digital Theaters.  This job requires the technician to play and/or program HD movies at scheduled times throughout the day. This position includes monitoring films, greeting guests, and ensuring a high quality experience for all patrons. The Technician also provide technical support for events held in both theaters, Pilot House, outdoor amphitheater and in designated areas thought the facility. Theater technicians work with a variety of Discovery World staff and outside clients utilizing or renting spaces or equipment for events. The Technician also provides technical support for events throughout the Discovery World Museum including Distance Learning Programs. The ability to work nights, weekends, and have a flexible schedule is mandatory.

Qualifications

  • High School or equivalent diploma required for employment
  • College level training in stage lighting, electronics, microphones or stage management preferred
  • 2 years experience of working with audio/visual equipment including, stage lighting, sound boards, cameras, projectors, microphones and electronics
  • 2 years experience working in a theater type environment
  • 2 years working in a customer service type environment
  • 3 years working with computers or in different digital environments
  • Experience in both live and video productions

Responsibilities

Note: Responsibilities mostly reside in the Digital & Innovation Theaters however they are not limited to them.

  • Operate high definition projectors, light boards, sound boards, monitors, microphones, computers (PC and Apple) and distance learning equipment
  • Assist the Theater Manager with live and taped productions in the Innovation and Digital Theater
  • Provide customer service to all Discovery World guests
  • Respond to work requests made by the Performance Coordinator and Video Producer
  • Work with Floor Staff to ensure school or special groups are viewing the correct film
  • Provide technical support for events throughout the Museum including nights/weekends
  • Prepare theater spaces for performances, activities and events
  • Assist clients during, before, and after facility rentals
  • Assist in setting up/breaking down equipment
  • Hang theatrical lights & replace bulbs
  • Regularly work on high ladders to reach high spaces
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance
  • Regularly clean theaters
  • Follow strict guidelines to insure the safety of other technicians, the audience and performers.
  • Other duties as assigned

Video Production Department

 

Actor

Part-Time
Friday, Saturday, and Sundays | 8:30am-5:00pm | Special events as needed

Description

As part of the video production team, Discovery World actors provide performances in media productions & live theater shows. In addition, actors perform regularly throughout the Discovery World facility including Innovation Exhibit floor where they compliment the visitor experience by staging or improvising performances that explain or demonstrate exhibits & technology in a theatrical manner. The ability to convey accurate information regarding scientific process and technology though characterization, improvisation & performance is essential. Performers report to the Performance Coordinator. Must have the ability to work weekends and a flexible schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in media productions, live theater shows, and in exhibit spaces
  • Perform individually or with an in-house improv group
  • Attend rehearsals and memorize scripts
  • Follow stage manager directions on content and delivery
  • Take direction from the Video Producer and/or Performance Coordinator
  • Learn basic scientific principles of exhibits on the floor
  • Operate and demonstrate exhibit technology
  • Handle guest questions concerning exhibits and museum shows and general inquiries while in character
  • Assists with special evening or weekend performances
  • Prepare the exhibit floor and theater for tours
  • Assist in set up and breakdown of equipment
  • Contributes and shares ideas for improving shows
  • Perform for Distance Learning productions as needed
  • Operate Macintosh and PC computers
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience in live theater
  • At least 3 years of improvisational acting skills
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Professional demeanor
  • Ability to stay in character for long periods of time on Exhibit Floor Stage
  • Comfortable working with various age groups
  • Ability to follow direction from a stage manager
  • Basic understanding of science, technology, and electronic
  • Flexible schedule
  • Working knowledge of basic computer programs including Microsoft Office

Experience Department

Lab Educator

Full-Time: 40+ hours/week

Description

The lab educator delivers a wide spectrum of lab activities to school groups.  The lab educator delivers programs that engage youth and adults in hands-on science as well as in technology centered experiences.  The lead lab educator needs to be comfortable with diverse age groups and able to adapt activities to the needs of the group at hand. 

The lab educator joins lab/program development teams as directed.  He/she will be involved in the creation of media and models related to lab activities.  The lab educator in addition to leading programs in Discovery World’s labs also delivers programs via videoconferencing technologies.  The lead lab educator is at the front line of customer service as a representative of the organization.

The lab educator is responsible for the inventory and procurement of supplies as well as the upkeep and maintenance of labs. 

The lab educator models best practices of informal education for the team of lab educators. 

Major Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Develops and delivers interactive, hands-on, inquiry based lab programs and supplemental materials as needed (secondary educator) to a K-12 audience while maintaining the Discovery World mission and educational philosophy.
  • Engages in the development of innovative new lab programming for the center.
  • Develops pre and post field trip materials for schools.
  • Manages the maintenance, purchasing and organization of all school lab equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares and maintains school lab program materials.
  • Works collaboratively with the Education Coordinator to train and mentor new staff.
  • Prepares reports detailing attendance and evaluation of school lab programs.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Education Department and Reservations Department to maintain communication and accuracy in lab and educational space bookings.
  • Efficiently schedules the Education Team members to promote quality programming and to maximize staff time.
  • Plans and implements all day camp programming and coordination.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of special events.
  • Contributes to publications as needed to promote educational programs.
  • Leads the coordination and training of volunteers.
  • Collaborates with the Education Coordinator on the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and training of educators for the department.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in science, education or related field.
  • Experience writing curriculum.
  • Knowledge of science, technology, and entrepreneurial subject matter.
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Flexible and service oriented

S/V Denis Sullivan

Discovery World is always looking for professional crew to work on Wisconsin’s State Flagship, the S/V Denis Sullivan based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

We hire for the following crew positions:

Experienced Mates

We have four main hiring seasons for two- to four-month contracts (all dates are tentative):

May to September: You can experience education programming and sailing on several of the Great Lakes.

September to December: A transit out of the Great Lakes in the fall to the tropical saltwater seas via the St. Lawrence Seaway and the east coast of the U.S.

December to April: Winter education programming centered out of southern Florida with trips to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

April to June: Her return transit in the spring to her homeport at Pier Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI.

Due to the extreme and often inclement conditions of the transits, we prefer to hire crew with proven seaworthiness for the fall and spring, we prefer to secure all contracts in advance.

Required qualifications

All crew must have the legal right to work in the U.S.

Chief Mate

A Master 100-ton / Mate 200-ton near costal will qualify on a coastal cruise. Open ocean cruise tracks (sometimes on transits) would require an Ocean license.

Licensed 2nd and 3rd mates: are strongly encouraged. However with the approval of the Master of the vessel 2+ years of experience may be sufficient.

Tall ship sailing experience, ability and desire to educate people of all ages. Additional education experience.
