Biology Lab

The Biology Lab allows students to explore everything from microscopic organisms to understanding how to measure different substances and materials using professional laboratory tools. By demonstrating proper lab techniques, students experience a new relationship with the natural world – especially the most abundant resource in our backyard – the Great Lakes.

Investigating Anatomy: Vertebrate Dissection

90 min
Anatomy, Fish Biology, Body Systems

Explore the anatomy of a vertebrate and learn the basics of dissection in this hands-on lab. Students work in small groups as they identify and investigate specific organs, body systems, and the unique adaptations of fish.

DPI Standards:
Science: F.12.11
Next Generation Science Standards: HS-LS2-8
Investigating Anatomy: Invertebrate Dissection

60 min
Anatomy, Body Systems, Invertebrate Adaptations

Explore the anatomy of an invertebrate and learn about the basics of dissections while delving into this hands-on lab. Students will work in small groups to identify and investigate specific organs, body systems, and the unique adaptations of squid.

DPI Standards:
Science: F.8.1, F.8.2, F.8.6,
Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources: AS2.b.4.m, AS2.b.5.m
Next Generation Science Standards Addressed: MS-LS1-3, MS-LS1-8
Genotypes, Phenotypes, & Blood Types

45 min
Punnett Squares, Genetics

Investigate the science of heredity and genetics through blood typing. Students type synthetic blood samples and use the basic rules of genetics to solve a case of disputed inheritance.

DPI Standards:
Science: F.12.3
Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources: BT2.b.13.h

Incriminating Skeletons

90 min
Bone Features, Body Proportions, Mathematics

Explore the secrets held in bones. Examine skulls of different Wisconsin mammals to identify their varying characteristics and functions. Use the science of anthropometrics to determine what can be learned about you from just one bone.

DPI Standards:
Common Core Math: A-REI.3
