STEM+ LAB

The Stem + Lab is a workshop for activities that unlock the principles of science ranging from design-based inquiries to experimentation and prototyping. This space is equally home to programs and experiences in archaeology, physics, chemistry, and computer drafting and design.

Tools, Time, & Culture

45 min
History, Anthropology, Technology

Investigate the science of archaeology, and piece together the puzzle of our past by examining actual artifacts, simulating carbon dating techniques, and exploring the tools and techniques used by archaeologists.

DPI Standards:
Science: B.8.6, D.8.8
Social Studies: B.8.1
Green Plastic

45 min
Environmental Science, Polymers

Investigate organic polymers by creating a batch of bioplastic. Shape the plastic using molds and use it to investigate bio-degradability, comparing it to standard petroleum-based plastics.

Max 20 students per session.

DPI Standards:
Art & Design: B.8.7, C.8.7
Science: D.8.3, F.8.10
Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources: NR3.a.12.m

Put Your Finger on It

45 min
6th Grade Only
Forensics, Biometrics

Investigate the science of forensics in this hands-on lab. Fingerprinting, hair analysis, and DNA sequencing are explored as students work to solve a mock crime and learn the techniques and methods of scientific criminal investigation.

DPI Standards:
Science: F.8.4, G.8.2, G.8.3
Social Studies: E.8.7
Next Generation Science Standards Addressed: MS-LS1-1
