Heroes of Science

What does a scientist look like? What about an engineer? A physicist? A chemist? An astronomer? A mathematician? An astronaut? They should look like everyone. They are everyone.

The people represented in this exhibition are obviously extraordinary. No one who discovers pulsars or invents the Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph or develops the foundational mathematics of Quantum Physics is ordinary.

The heroes you’ll find in this exhibition also faced incredible challenges. These individuals persevered and helped build the world we live in.

Our world still has deep challenges to overcome. Racism, misogyny, and homophobia still exist. Systemic oppression still exists. To say nothing of the personal and indirect attacks that people of color face regularly. It was wrong then. It is wrong now. It will be wrong tomorrow.

Racism hurts all of us. And given an uncertain, possibly chaotic future, we need everyone. Everyone has different ideas and experiences, backgrounds, voices, ways of seeing the world, skills, and talents. The future needs all of us, working together, pulling in the same general direction.

Discovery World exists to provide opportunities for all members of our community and to inspire all learners. We must do more to provide access for those from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM fields. Let’s support each other as we strive for positive change in the fight against injustice and inequality.

In this exhibition, we are celebrating intelligence, curiosity, creativity, determination, and the indomitable human spirit. We are celebrating a very few of the very best of us.
