The Kohl’s Design It! Lab is fun for the whole family!

Projects can take anywhere from 5-45 minutes, and a Kohl’s Design It! Lab team member will guide you through the use of tools like hot glue guns, heat sealers, and vacuum-formers.

Projects Currently Available - February 2020: Simple Mechanisms

Viking ShipsWhat is a cam? What is a cam-shaft? What is a fulcrum? What is an axis? Why do these things matter? The builder will learn about these key features on this project, while being inspired to do more research on a Viking longship when the builder get home. What else uses a cam? Ask our Kohl’s Design It! Lab Team.

Magic Pearl RunnerA millennia after sinking into the ocean, the Magic Pearl is still in motion. Build your own bubble with cardboard and glue, and you will see what the pearl can do. With simple machines to help on the way, the Magic Pearl Runner can be yours today!

Learn Morse CodeHave you ever thought “how do I send a silent message a long distance without using a phone, email, instant-message, etc.”? Well, The Lighthouse Locket is perfect for YOU! Morse Code is a system of communication developed by Samuel F.B. Morse that uses a series of dots and dashes to relay coded messages. Learn Morse Code by sending, receiving and deciphering lighthouse messages.

Owl ClothespinQuestion: What animal is nearly all white, nests in the Arctic tundra, flies almost silently, eats small rodents and you can hang clothes from it? If you answered: “a Snowy Owl on a clothespin” you would be correct. The owl is specifically adapted to be successful for its natural habitat, kinda like how the clothespin was designed, so we decided to hybridize these two into a fun educational project you can build.

Discover the Upcycling Wall

Transform old magazines, egg cartons, ribbon, cardboard, yarn, bubble wrap, Popsicle sticks, and other interesting materials into whatever you can think of!

The Kohl’s Design It! Lab is open to all ages. Specific projects will be available for different age groups.

Kids Corner

Complete with highchairs, tiny tables and stools, markers and crayons, all sorts of building blocks, and pillows, the Kids Corner is the perfect place for active makers 5 and under.

Educators

We know that educators are always looking for ways to enhance their everyday curriculum. That’s where we can help!

The Kohl’s Design It! Lab offers exciting programming through either onsite interdisciplinary workshops offered as part of your field trip visit to Discovery World, or as the Kohl’s Design! Mobile lab –an onsite teaching lab that brings the learning experience to your classroom!

Both of these options will give your students a unique learning opportunity through these hands-on design experiences.
